Emma is a very damaged and conflicted woman. The foster system turned her into a very self-reliant, jaded young woman at a very early age. Emma learning quickly to rely only on herself and not let people get too close. The hardest lesson was learnt at the age of three, when the family who initially adopted her sent her back to the orphanage after having a child of their own. Emma was left feeling like she couldn't be loved, like she was unloveable. This was the start of Emma hardening her heart. Eventually she started to trust again, when in the home of Ingrid, however she was scared into running away before Ingrid could adopt her, due to the fact that Ingrid was secretly from a world Emma wouldn't understand until she was much older.
Since Neal; her one-time love, Emma has honed her instinct, building up her own code and trusting herself in every aspect. She prides herself on knowing when a person is lying, something she calls 'her superpower', and trusting nothing at face value. She doesn't allow herself to be jerked around, doesn't let anyone else make her choices for her, never asks for help and keeps everyone at arms length for self-preservation. Although her 'superpower' doesn't always work, proving that her ability to tell when people are lying is subjective to when she herself feels safe or is questioning a persons motives.
Emma is a survivor. She's learned to be used to being on her own, and her own life experiences have made her a sucker for the underdog. Against her better judgement, she will compromise herself to help those in need and fight for what is right. She's a firm believer that no one should let anyone tell them how to run their own lives, and that they should stand up for what they believe in.
For all that Emma pushes people away, she is fiercely protective of the small number of people she is close to. Since Henry found her, she's become very protective of him, even after she tried not to get close to him, she may think that she's bad news for people, but she also desperately wants to belong somewhere. She knew that he had a life that she was never a part of, since she gave him up. And while she wanted to tell him that she couldn't be in his life, there was a part of her that wanted to get to know her son, and that small part of her that just didn't trust the woman that adopted Henry. In many ways, being close to Henry gave her something she never managed to find herself when she was searching desperately for answers to her own life; attachment, love, security. Against all odds, Henry cared for her, and through the insanity that followed their reunion, Emma discovered the depth of her maternal love.
While Emma's let down her walls a little since coming to Storybrooke, and has actually allowed herself to start to let people in, she still has problems trusting people. She's used to being on her own, and still getting used to the idea of letting others in, there's very few people in her heart, and it's hard for her to let others in there. The more people Emma cares about, the more people who can hurt her. Emma does have a small group people she trusts, people she believes she can rely on, and is attempting to mend her own relationship with her parents, since the curse broke. Emma's sense of justice and nobility comes mostly from her new found position of authority, where people rely on her and look to her for guidance, something she's never had before, but is finding herself good at.
Emma had a place in Storybrooke, she has a place with Henry, and these are things she covets dearly. While her life was greatly shaken up, losing magic only to suddenly be thrust back into that world, Emma is still finding her footing in where she fits into things.
Human Lie Detector: Emma can usually tell when someone is lying, like a little bell going off in her head. It tends to work best when she doesn't care about anything surrounding the circumstances, as when she has a vested interest in the matter, her heart screws with her mind. The skill is best put to use catching bond jumpers or calling people out on being asses.
Magic: Emma has a strong sense of magic, something innate within her. Emma has the ability to move objects from one place to another, use raw magic as a weapon, create light and heal people. Emma's magic is tied to her emotional state, the more emotional she becomes the more unstable her magic, however her acceptance of her magic has made it more manageable and controllable for Emma. Her magic is still in it's infancy and she has limited training in using it.
Bails Bonds: in Boston and beyond, Emma worked as a bounty hunter, this has given her numerous skills in locating people, manipulating people, running in heels, lock picking, brawling, scaling down buildings and kicking tooshy.
Can't Touch This: as a product of true love, Emma's heart cannot be take from her chest. Which...yay. Considering who she ends up around most of the time. Freaking heart stealing weirdos.
